Bottom line first: AI glasses and edge AI hardware are tracing a PCB demand curve that differs from the phone — thinner, more irregular in shape, more antennas, a smaller battery. This is not "a smaller phone board", and procurement criteria have to be recalibrated around thin lightweight stackups, rigid-flex construction and fast iteration. Carrying over phone-board quoting and acceptance logic tends to produce repeated rework at prototype stage.
Stackups go thin and density is released through stacked vias
The usable cross-section inside a temple arm is often only a few millimetres, so main boards move to 4–8 layer HDI at 0.4–0.6 mm board thickness, with line width and spacing entering the 60/60 μm range or finer. A small board area carrying many components means routing space can only be released through stacked vias and via-in-pad (POFV) — which also means that dielectric thickness tolerance and via-fill quality directly affect yield and have to be a review item before quoting, not an assumed capability.
Rigid-flex becomes the mainstream construction, and acceptance has to follow
There is a dynamic bend zone between frame and temple, and the mainstream approach is a rigid-flex board, or an FPC plus connector. The key difference from an ordinary rigid board is that the structure is not yet fixed while material and stackup already constrain each other. Acceptance of the bend zone must state the bend radius and bend cycle count and include dynamic bend verification; quoting a rigid-flex part as though it were an ordinary board usually leaves out that structure and verification cost.
RF and antennas: control consistency rather than stack the best material
Bluetooth, WiFi and UWB feed lines are loss-sensitive, but with a small board and short paths top-grade low-loss material is not always required. The two things that matter more are consistent feed-line impedance (50 Ω single-ended) and antenna keep-out rules. Specify the no-route and no-copper requirements inside the antenna projection area, and control feed-line impedance through the impedance coupon as well, rather than relying on a material part number to solve the problem.
With a small battery, power integrity and heat removal come before copper thickness
Edge AI hardware has small battery capacity and large transient load swings, so power-plane integrity and decoupling capacitor placement matter more than simply adding copper thickness. The device has no fan, so heat can only leave through spreading and through low-power design; temperature rise at local hot spots such as the SoC and the RF power amplifier has to be assessed at layout stage rather than at system test.
Five procurement calibration points
- Treat prototyping speed as a core metric: these products iterate on a monthly cadence, so favour lines that deliver prototypes in the 24-48 hour class with fast engineering feedback.
- Freeze stackup templates: turn main-board layer count, thickness and impedance into standard building blocks to cut the cost of reopening the stackup every time.
- Assess rigid-flex separately: bend life, material and structure are decided together and quoted as a separate line item.
- Write the acceptance basis down: thin boards are more sensitive to warpage, so put warpage, impedance and bend life into the specification together to avoid disputes in volume.
- Plan for small lots across many builds: require a supplier able to support a ramp from hundreds to thousands of pieces, not capacity scheduled only from a thousand pieces upward.
On trend, edge AI hardware form factors are still evolving quickly, and thin lightweight stackups and rigid-flex will stay mainstream in the near term; the more worthwhile investment on the buying side is aligning stackup templates, acceptance basis and iteration rhythm early rather than squeezing unit price, and writing the stackup template, impedance tolerance and warpage limit into the RFQ from the first build. Shenzhen Lingxin Technology's high-end line for AI compute boards covers 1–44 layers, finished copper up to 13oz (18oz maximum base copper on outer layers), a maximum panel size of 610×1100 mm and impedance tolerance of ±8% against a standard ±10%, with lead times as fast as 24-48 hours, subject to product complexity.
